Can you be smarter? Would you like to be?
Stress Makes You Stupid. It shuts down the brain and sends you into auto-survival mode. You don’t think, you react.
What if you weren’t so stressed? Would that change the way you think? Would you be smarter? Would you make better decisions?
I think so.
I’m not the only one, though. Behavioral scientists think so, too. They have made extensive studies and have come to understand how badly stress affects us.
They know it adversely affects our health. They know it affects our mental processes — in a bad way. They know it affects our relationships.
Imagine, for a moment, what life would be like without all the distress in it. Can you even envision it? If you have reached a certain level of stress, you lose the ability to even imagine it, much less believe it can happen for you. If you are at that level, bear with me and keep reading, even if it doesn’t seem like it can become a reality for you.
What would your relationships be like if you were at your nicest all the time with people — instead of your nastiest? What would that look like? Smiling? Probably. Understanding? Yes. Charismatic and charming? Certainly. Attractive? Yes.
What would being relaxed and happy at your job/career/business mean for you?
Would you be more productive? Yep.
Would you be more creative? The science says, “Yes!”
Would you make better, smarter decisions? Again, the science says, “Yes!”
So, back to the original questions: Can you be smarter? Would you like to be?
If the answer is yes, then your next step is to begin managing your stress.
If that thought overwhelms you and you are getting stressed over Stress Management, hang on. Take 3 slow, deep breaths, slowly counting from 1 to 3 as you breathe in and from 3 to 1 as you breathe out. This is the first tip for you on managing your stress: breathe.
If you don’t feel completely de-stressed after doing the breathing above, it’s okay. Keep at it. This is just the start, not the end.
